About
The Joe’s Friendly was started in 2009 when a small tournament took place at the Croatia Club House in commemoration of the club’s past President Joe Japuncic.“The Joe” celebrates Joe’s life and the values and honours his significant contribution to the club and community. It was his leadership and tireless efforts that became an inspiration to us all.Joe was a player with the club since his teenage years and remained with the club for the duration of his life. While serving the club as a player, he introduced new players to the organization and helped us secure first place standings in the league on more than one occasion. Prior to becoming President, he served the club in many roles; organizing teams, driving players to games, uniform duty, goal scorer as well as being a leader on and off the field.While President, Joe challenged the club to broaden its focus to encompass youth and women’s programs. In doing so, he reinforced the club’s philosophy of “family” and our facility as a family destination. He constantly focused on inclusiveness and a friendlier image for the sport of soccer, and in particular of those who played for our club. Joe believed we could have it all; elite level play and gracious competition that respected all participants be they players, referees, league officials or spectators.The club has grown, the facilities have improved but all at the club will remember what a big part Joe had in making the club what it is today. The Joe Friendly is our club’s, and the soccer community’s tribute to Joe, honouring his contribution to both the sport and the community.Joe was born on September 21, 1959 and passed away on January 4, 2005 at the age of 45.On behalf of the Edmonton Croatia Soccer Club, and Joe’s family Diane, Matthew and Mark, thank you again for your support and participation. We hope you experience much of what we aspire to capture in this and all subsequent Friendlies in Joe’s name.
